The Challenge
In immediate response to public safety concerns, the County
of Lancaster closed Royer Road Bridge over Cocalico Creek
when a bridge inspection identified extensive deterioration
and structural deficiencies. Quickly reopening this major
traffic route in the Ephrata area would require the accelerated
design and construction of a cost-effective replacement structure
with adequate hydraulic capacity, minimal impact to roadway
profile grade, and context-sensitive features reminiscent
of its historic setting. |

Our Answer
In only six months, RETTEW designed a two-span precast concrete
arch bridge with a unique arched parapet to mimic the distinguishing
feature of the original historic structure. To reduce the
County's long-term maintenance costs, RETTEW eliminated the
bridge deck by obtaining special PennDOT approval for a cost-effective
and site-appropriate multiple-span arch system. The use of
concrete form-liners and staining disguised this modern structure
by creating a stone-masonry-like façade. Today, Royer
Road Bridge sustains both mobility and aesthetic integrity
in rural Lancaster County.
