The Challenge
The client was embarking on an aggressive natural gas exploration campaign of the Marcellus Shale that involved drilling a large number of horizontal gas wells over the next five years in portions of leased state forest lands in multiple counties. The client needed an industry expert to develop a comprehensive water management plan which provided efficient, economical, and comprehensive solutions to locate water resources and handle hydraulic fracturing flowback fluids in a safe and environmentally sensitive manner. |

Our Answer
RETTEW provided the client with a comprehensive water management plan that included innovative and cost-effective ways to locate and develop water resources. The solution was to provide an intergrated system of surface and groundwater sources, with storage and distribution systems linking these supplies to the drilling areas. In addition, RETTEW was able to provide a safe and environmentally sensitive solution to the client’s hydraulic fracturing fluid flowback issue by capturing the flowback fluids and conducting onsite treatment, allowing the flowback fluids to be reused for future well stimulation operations. These solutions reduced the cost of obtaining water, enhanced the efficiency of the drilling operations, and reduced truck traffic to the area, significantly improving the safety and reducing the environmental effects of the operations.
