The Challenge
Contamination
was detected in water supplies for southern New Jersey, and
a 70-acre inactive sludge lagoon area under the jurisdiction
of Philadelphia Water Department (PWD) was called into question
as a potential source of the contamination. PWD wanted to
close the impoundments in place, needed to determine whether
their lagoons were responsible for the groundwater contamination
and needed to identify whether the site could be managed under
PA Act 2. |

Our Answer
RETTEW
assessed the environmental impact, if any, of the inactive
lagoons using supplemental monitoring wells and subsurface
sampling conducted via a helicopter and a custom-made coring
device. RETTEW performed an Ecological Assessment, Fate and
Transport Analysis and an aquifer characterization. As a result,
PWD's lagoons were cleared from responsibility for the southern
New Jersey groundwater
contamination and approved for closure. We also worked with
EPA to find ways to stabilize the lagoons and recycle the
land for future development. |
