Solutions for development

At RETTEW, our top priority is getting everyone home safely. While this may sound fairly straightforward, it requires a blend of experience, expertise, and strategic planning. Our dedication is more than just a statement—for more than 35 years, we’ve demonstrated a commitment to helping our communities return home to their families.

We cover all aspects of traffic engineering, from traffic impact studies and intersection evaluations to corridor safety improvements and highway occupancy permits (HOPs). Whether designing for a municipality or a private developer, RETTEW’s expert engineers look beyond the present need to the area’s future growth and economic development plans. Our comprehensive transportation solutions are designed to promote safe, efficient mobility for both current and future community needs.

We use our extensive knowledge of statistics and probability, reviewing hundreds of traffic reports and studying surrounding intersections, signals, and patterns to create plans that speak directly to the decision-makers and community members. In planning for new developments, we consider the amount of delay commuters may experience and then present ideas for mitigation, such as adding a turning lane or signal, or making a lane longer – all strategies to keep traffic flowing and communities moving.

Experts on every road

Unlike other areas of engineering, when it comes to traffic, there are thousands of “experts” on every road – your community’s drivers! RETTEW understands public outreach and education plays a pivotal role in determining a project’s success. We facilitate communication between decision-makers and the community by presenting clear, accessible data to both parties, keeping everyone well-informed.

Beyond the highways and byways, we also specialize in facilitating traffic within large complexes. Shopping centers, residential developments, energy plants, and industrial facilities all need to move their vehicles in the best, safest, and most efficient pattern. Adjusting signal timings, improving distance in a merge lane, and reviewing signage locations, geological conditions, and roadway capacity all serve to create traffic flow efficiencies.

Traffic in practice

When one client needed to reroute its construction traffic to avoid school bus routes for optimal safety and drive time, they called in the experts at RETTEW. Narrow mountain roads were the primary way to access their job sites. We worked with multiple school districts and industrial companies to develop a model using state traffic and roadway data and real-time traffic GIS tools to reroute trucks and keep traffic away from school buses during the mornings and afternoons.

In Ohio, the Governor maintains a list of the most dangerous intersections for the purpose of prioritizing repairs and improvements at those locations. RETTEW’s engineers redesigned a complete intersection – from signaling and line painting to timing, turn lane length, and lighting to remove it from the hazard list. Our reputation and track record for design expertise for various state DOTs, permitting, and statistical analysis took one dangerous intersection off the map.

When a developer plans to build a new warehouse, it not only means new construction but also new traffic challenges. RETTEW scoped this project for the developer and met with the municipality and DOT to review potential traffic patterns, identify impacted intersections, and consider nearby entities, such as schools and churches. This comprehensive evaluation included assessing site selection factors like road frontage average daily traffic (ADT), crash data, potential DOT permitting requirements, and possible improvements at nearby signals or access points. We also reviewed wetland impacts, zoning, utilities, and stormwater management needs. Through our integrated approach, RETTEW delivered a comprehensive traffic impact analysis that addressed every critical aspect of the proposed development.

Not only do traffic plans make for safer roadways, but they also make for pedestrian-friendly areas too. From LED lights and radar detection equipment to sidewalks, crosswalks, and crossing signals – each element is engineered for a purpose. When one municipality wanted to bring more walkability to their area, they called the experts at RETTEW. We used planning studies to engineer a new sidewalk and pedestrian path all the way from design to construction. Next, we updated the traffic signals and crosswalks. But the project didn’t stop there. We also provided detailed instructions on how to detour traffic during construction and maintenance.

Good advice and good advocacy

No one wants to spend more money, be slowed down by permitting, or have a project fail or endanger lives. At RETTEW, we pride ourselves on being good stewards of your budget as well as trusted advisors and advocates. That’s why we are right beside you the whole way. Our experts are at your community meetings, giving board presentations, or walking through the process with investors. After all, these are our communities too, and we are invested in seeing your project safely through completion.

Any project worth doing right takes time. We are clear and upfront about potential obstacles, timelines, and provide realistic expectations. We know how to spot issues early, so you don’t have to spend time and resources mitigating mid-construction changes or permit denials. We understand time is money. Involving RETTEW in your project early helps avoid potential challenges and streamlines results. Our reputation stands on its own, and we value your trust.
