Stay cozy, but stay safe!

During this special time of the year, make sure you’re being as safe as possible while celebrating the holidays with family and friends.

Safe decorating tips:

  • Use a step ladder to decorate your tree – don’t stand on chairs or other furniture
  • Avoid inhaling artificial snow
  • Make sure strings of lights have no exposed or frayed wires
  • Be careful when using angel hair – the spun glass material can irritate eyes and skin

Safe shopping tips:

  • Be careful when giving items with coin lithium batteries – they can be easily swallowed by children
  • Check toy recalls to be sure you’re purchasing safe items
  • Select gifts for the senior members of your family that are not too heavy or hard to carry

Fire safety tips:

  • Never leave a burning candle unattended or sleep in a room with lit candles
  • Keep candles out of reach of children
  • Make sure candles are placed on sturdy surfaces
  • Don’t burn candles near trees, curtains, or anything else flammable
  • Don’t burn holiday items such as wrapping paper, wreaths, or tree branches in the fireplace
  • Clean out the fireplace and sweep the chimney at least once a year

 Safe cooking tips:

  • Don’t rinse raw meat or poultry before cooking
  • Use food thermometers to make sure meat is cooked to a safe temperature
  • Don’t eat leftovers after four days
  • When reheating soups, sauces, or gravy, bring to a rolling boil
  • Wash your hands frequently
