As a Project Technician supporting geophysics and subsurface utility engineering projects, Erica Carbaugh is part of the team helping clients better understand what lies beneath the surface before construction begins. While geology wasn’t her favorite subject in school, her perspective has shifted over time. “It makes a difference when you can connect it to the real world,” she said—especially when that knowledge helps explain why certain areas are more prone to sinkholes or landslides and why subsurface conditions matter long before the first shovel hits the ground.

One of Erica’s most memorable workdays didn’t happen in the field at all. While traveling through BWI to meet with a major rail client, she found herself stuck at the airport for hours after the entire terminal lost power—right after clearing security and ordering breakfast. With no electricity and no clear answers, the team waited it out and eventually reached their destination, albeit a few hours behind schedule. It was an unexpected reminder that even the most well-planned days can take surprising turns.

Outside of work, Erica stays busy with her kids, focusing on keeping them active and soaking up every moment of their early years, including meeting the Easter Bunny, as shown here. From regular family trips to the gym to participating together in community races like the Carlisle Downtown Mile and the Turkey Trot, she enjoys sharing her love of fitness—whether they’re running or riding part of the way. When she finds a little extra time for herself, Erica loves summer, takes part in a monthly book club, and fondly remembers her days playing in an adult kickball league. She jokes she’d still play today—if her kids wouldn’t be tempted to run onto the field and join in.
