RETTEW delivered full engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) services for the installation of a 4-mile renewable natural gas (RNG) pipeline connecting a newly constructed RNG facility at the Catawba County Landfill to a Piedmont Natural Gas transmission line. The project included the design and construction of a metering and regulation station pad to facilitate the pipeline tie-in.
The client engaged RETTEW at project inception to provide a turnkey solution, including conceptual pipeline routing, right-of-way acquisition, permitting, and construction. We evaluated multiple pipeline corridors to identify a route that minimized permitting and construction risks, addressed landowner concerns, and met project schedule and budget constraints.
Key challenges included negotiating easements with landowners and completing 3,200 feet of horizontal directional drill through challenging terrain. RETTEW managed all technical, regulatory, and coordination aspects to keep the project on track and meet the required in-service date.
The completed pipeline allows upgraded methane from the landfill to be injected into the Piedmont Natural Gas system, supporting renewable energy distribution in the surrounding communities.
