RETTEW served as the civil engineering lead for the adaptive reuse conversion of a former hotel and conference center into Cityplace, a 194-unit, twin-building apartment complex with groundfloor retail space in downtown Allentown. This project exemplifies RETTEW’s ability to navigate complex urban redevelopment challenges while prioritizing sustainability and community integration.
RETTEW successfully obtained municipal approvals to permit the existing hotel as an adapative reuse property, which allowed the development team to convert it to apartments with groundfloor retail (Cityplace North). RETTEW then designed a four-story addition with amenity space, and additional groundfloor retail. The addition, known as Cityplace South, uses both green roofs and interior courtyard plantings to meet NPDES requirements. The project also incorporated innovative stormwater management solutions to control runoff and protect local waterways. Secure parking and bike storage facilities were added to promote sustainable transportation options and reduce traffic congestion.
Cityplace plays a crucial role in Allentown’s economic revitalization by attracting new residents and businesses, creating jobs, and boosting local commerce. The project offers high-quality living spaces with contemporary amenities, fostering a dynamic and engaging community. This project is part of a broader initiative to rejuvenate Allentown, transforming it into a vibrant urban center. RETTEW’s strategic engineering and sustainable practices ensure long-term value and positive impact for the community.
