RETTEW played a pivotal role in this streetscape project in downtown Allentown, contributing notably to the city’s revitalization efforts. As the design engineer, RETTEW focused on enhancing ADA accessibility and integrating the streetscape with other major downtown developments. Key services provided include conducting comprehensive field surveys to identify ADA compliance issues and developing detailed site plans.

RETTEW prepared traffic signal permit plans, designed accessible routes, and coordinated landscaping and lighting. The project included rehabilitating three bus stops, two with new shelters, and all with benches and landscape planters. RETTEW redesigned traffic lane configurations to eliminate a well-known conflict point between transit buses and other traffic, which has helped reduce bottenecks at the intersection. We analyzed roof drainage from 29 downspouts to design trench drains and sidewalk pipes, removing concentrated runoff from the sidewalk. We also created a uniform pedestrian zone that provides a continuous ADA pathway through the entire project length, and we updated the parking management scheme throughout the project to bring it into compliance with City codes.

RETTEW’s meticulous approach ensured the project complied with all local and county ordinances, providing a safer, more accessible, and aesthetically pleasing environment for the community. This project not only improved pedestrian safety and accessibility but also contributed to the overall aesthetic and functional enhancement of downtown Allentown.
