The Pennsylvania State University sought to modernize and expand recreational opportunities at its Greater Allegheny commonwealth campus by replacing an aging sand volleyball court with a new, multipurpose sport court. The goal was to create a versatile outdoor space supporting basketball, tennis, volleyball, pickleball, and deck hockey, offering year-round recreational options for students, faculty, and staff.
RETTEW provided master planning services based on our team’s extensive experience designing and delivering athletic and recreational facilities. Our engineers and planners developed 3D renderings of the proposed site, helping stakeholders visualize the new space and make informed decisions regarding court layout, surface materials, and orientation to optimize playability and user experience. Technical considerations included stormwater management to address the increase in impervious surface, durable and low-maintenance paving materials, strategic striping layouts and color selections for multiple sports, construction phasing to minimize campus disruption, and cost analyses for potential design enhancements.
The new multipurpose sport court provides a modern, accessible, and engaging recreational hub for the Greater Allegheny campus. Students now have opportunities for physical activity, wellness, and intramural competition in a single, centralized location. Faculty and staff benefit from a revitalized campus environment that encourages outdoor engagement and provides a flexible venue for events and recreational programming.
