RETTEW addressed persistent groundwater contamination at a Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) maintenance facility, stemming from previous operations involving a diesel underground storage tank. Despite PennDOT’s prior attempts, achieving regulatory closure remained an obstacle for the site.
Using advanced technology, RETTEW precisely mapped volatile organic compounds, creating a detailed 3D contamination model. This informed our choice of treatment using in situ chemical oxidation with activated sodium persulfate, which was confirmed effective through a pilot test. We implemented our plan by injecting 3,000 pounds of activated sodium persulfate at controlled rates, totaling 1,600 gallons of solution. This method ensured thorough remediation without surfacing issues.
RETTEW closely monitored the remediation progress with routine groundwater assessments. Post-injection, a significant decrease in dissolved contaminant concentrations signaled progress towards achieving regulatory closure. Through a methodical approach, RETTEW provided a targeted solution, effectively remedying the PennDOT facility’s groundwater contamination.
