RETTEW provided services to Lancaster County for the replacement of a single-span steel girder floorbeam stringer bridge that was closed to traffic due to failure of the steel members. RETTEW had to navigate complex agency reviews for this local federal aid project because of the bridge’s location in and significance to the Pequea North Rural Historic District.
We coordinated review and approval of a purpose and needs statement, historic resource survey, Phase I archaeology survey, and historic bridge rehabilitation report with the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission and the Federal Highway Administration. RETTEW then successfully developed a context-sensitive design for a single-span prestressed beam replacement bridge that met historic mitigation requirements of the review agencies.
Due to the project impacts on the historic bridge, RETTEW prepared a Joint Permit application and was successful in obtaining a Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection Individual Waters Obstruction Encroachment Permit and U.S. Army Corp of Engineers Permit in a timely manner to meet the project schedule. RETTEW also redesigned the roadway alignment to address safety issues and provide for additional shoulder width for the local Amish community.
