SR 0034 Intersection Improvements

The intersection of SR 0034, SR 0850, and Pisgah State Road in Shermans Dale was plagued with a significant number of traffic accidents. The four-legged intersection posed serious safety risks, necessitating a redesign to improve traffic flow and safety for the community.

RETTEW undertook a comprehensive approach to address the intersection’s challenges. We designed a new roundabout to significantly enhance safety and traffic flow at the intersection. RETTEW’s plans also included future-proofing measures, such as provisions for an additional turning lane if required by future growth. Key features of the roundabout included truck aprons and splitter islands to maintain access for local residences and businesses, improved sight distances, reduced vehicle speeds, and eliminating direct hit impacts. In addition, we replaced a structurally and hydraulically deficient culvert and installed retaining walls to minimize property impacts. We also incorporated upgraded stormwater facilities to meet the latest permitting requirements.

By providing a holistic solution that addresses immediate safety concerns while accommodating future growth, RETTEW delivered a lasting improvement to the SR 0034 intersection that benefits the Shermans Dale community.
