October marks Fire Prevention Week, with this year’s focus on the risks of lithium-ion batteries in the home. With the rapid pace of new technology, lithium-powered devices—ranging from personal electronics and power tools to electric vehicles—fill our homes and workplaces. While convenient, these batteries also pose serious fire risks.
In fact, lithium-ion batteries are responsible for roughly 25% of all electronic device fire incidents each year. Between 2017 and 2022, the United States reported more than 25,000 cases of fires and overheating involving lithium-ion batteries. Fires are also 15 times more likely to occur in rechargeable batteries, with approximately 70% of incidents happening during or immediately after charging.
Key Strategies to Reduce Lithium-Ion Fire Risks

Use Certified Chargers – Always charge with manufacturer-approved or certified chargers to avoid overheating and overcharging.
Avoid Overcharging – Don’t leave devices plugged in overnight or unattended while charging.

Store Batteries Safely – Keep them in a cool, dry place (ideally between 40°F and 80°F). Avoid storing fully charged batteries for extended periods; instead, store them at a charge level below 30%.
Inspect Regularly – Check for dents, swelling, puncture, or other damage. Compromised batteries have a much higher risk of failure.

Control Heat in Larger Systems – For bigger battery setups, use thermal management systems to monitor and regulate temperatures.
Charge in Safe Areas – Place devices on non-combustible surfaces and away from flammable items. Ensure good ventilation.

Train for Emergencies – In the workplace, ensure staff know how to respond to lithium-ion fires and use the proper extinguishing methods.
Follow Manufacturer Guidelines – Always follow the product’s instructions for safe use, charging, and storage.
By following these precautions, you can significantly reduce the likelihood of lithium-ion battery fires and help ensure the safe use of your devices.
