Effective safety management systems are proven to lower insurance and operational costs, make more effective use of investments, and increase employee morale. Such benefits can be realized by all companies regardless of size. Implementing systems like ISO 45001:2018 and Process Safety Management (PSM) help reduce risk for your employees and business.
ISO 45001
Published on March 12, 2018, ISO 45001:2018 is an internationally recognized safety management system to help users manage risk as a business process rather than a standards approach. Unlike its predecessor, OHSAS 18001, ISO 45001 includes opportunity management as well as risk management to support a continual improvement approach. Organizations that adopt ISO 45001:2018 are able to better protect their workers, brand reputation, supply chain, and future growth on a global level. Companies certified to the OHSAS 18001 standard have a three-year period to migrate their certificate to ISO 45001.
Process Hazard Analysis
A Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) is a systematic effort designed to identify and analyze hazards associated with the processing or handling of highly hazardous materials. The PHA method provides helpful information to workers and employers for improving safety decisions. What if, checklists, and hazard and operability (HAZOP) studies are common tools used to evaluate process hazards. After a PHA is conducted, employers must act on the findings. It is best to establish a system or set of procedures to promptly address the PHA team’s finding and recommendations. PSM-regulated companies are required to update and revalidate their PHA at least every five years.
