SR 0115 Widening and Intersection Improvements

The Pocono Raceway, a major tourist attraction, draws huge crowds of motorsports fans. During special events, traffic is restricted to one lane on SR 0115, creating problems for local residents and obstructing emergency vehicles. The intersection of SR 0115 and SR 0903 is unconventional and has become a high-crash area. The area is environmentally sensitive, with roads winding through wetlands, and frequent flooding on SR 0115 and SR 4002 from a nearby stream.

RETTEW’s transportation and environmental experts addressed challenges of this high-profile project by adding a third lane to ease raceway traffic, converting the intersection to a conventional T-intersection, and installing a traffic signal. To eliminate flooding, we added a box culvert and relocated the stream. Our environmental expertise and our relationships with various regulatory agencies enabled us to keep the project moving while adhering to an aggressive schedule. Through close coordination with these agencies, we met the let date required by the project’s funding source, a Pennsylvania Economic Growth Initiative Grant. Because of this project, motorists have better and safer access from I-80, roadway flooding events are greatly reduced, and the Pocono Raceway continues to operate as a popular tourist area.
