Jefferson County Road Maintenance and Route Upgrades

A client’s haul route ran along Fernwood Road, which provides access to the Jefferson County Airport from the south. The airport access was restricted because of a tight turning radius and several sections of deteriorating roadway. Additionally, water was pooling in the existing intersection, which needed to be addressed for public safety. Our client was looking for a solution to improve access to this road for heavy trucks used for operations, as well as to provide better access to the airport for the community.

RETTEW conducted a comprehensive review and developed a design to upgrade the tight intersection and the connecting roadway. We also completed a geotechnical assessment and designed a suitable overlay along approximately two miles of roadway, completing base repairs in several areas where the roadway was failing and upgrading the guardrail where necessary. RETTEW also improved drainage at the intersection to alleviate pooling water. These improvements resulted in a stable roadway capable of handling heavy vehicles, and easier access to the airport by the community.
