Substation 3D Scanning

To meet increased consumer demand and enhance network reliability, a major electricity supplier plans to improve their electric delivery system by replacing aging facilities and building new ones. As part of RETTEW’s Contractor of Choice contract, the client asked us to provide an as-built record of one of their existing substations in anticipation of future expansion of the site.

RETTEW scanned, registered, and modeled the substation and provided an AutoCAD 3D model referenced to state plane coordinates. We completed the fieldwork in one week — something that, with typical survey practices, would take two or three weeks to finish. The final 3D model provided greater detail in less time and at a cost less than that of conventional survey methods. This substation is one of about 400 substations the client plans to update.
