Bloomsburg Sanitary Sewer CCTV Condition Assessment

The Municipal Authority of the Town of Bloomsburg was experiencing significant infiltration and inflow of stormwater to their sanitary system, which was overwhelming their downstream wastewater treatment facilities. Under budgetary constraints, the Authority identified a high-priority portion of their sewershed for immediate evaluation and condition assessment. RETTEW’s Subsurface Utility Engineering team used Envirosight RovverX robotic crawler CCTV and CleverScan manhole scanning technology to conduct a National Association of Sewer Service Companies (NASSCO) certified condition assessment of 21,000 LF of sanitary main, lateral tie-in, and associated manhole facilities.

During a 13-day field investigation, we field-marked and located the sanitary facilities with shallow geophysical techniques and locatable rodders. Then we surveyed horizontal locations of sanitary mains, lateral tie-ins, and manholes to improve the accuracy of existing as-built mapping; we also collected invert elevations. RETTEW identified significant sanitary system defects and points of infiltration and inflow, including 6,100 LF of sanitary main that needed immediate rehabilitation and repair. We provided a final deliverable to the client that included WinCan software-based pipe and manhole inspection reports, updated GIS based utility as-builts, and recommendations for sewer rehabilitation. The client used the information to secure funding for and implement long-term upgrades to the sanitary system.
