Sussex Square Apartments Retaining Wall

This project at the Sussex Square Apartments in Plymouth Township addressed a deteriorating retaining wall that separated an apartment complex parking area and a tributary to Plymouth Creek. The existing retaining wall sustained damage over time, including scour, undermining, and exposure of the wall’s concrete toe. In addition, the northern
40 feet of the retaining wall was rotating towards the creek and needed to be replaced.

RETTEW stabilized the wall to address safety concerns and stabilized the stream to repair the banks and prevent future scour. The design portion of the project included surveying, wetland delineation and permitting, geotechnical investigations, engineering design, and rehabilitation of the existing bank. The rehabilitation included installing soil nails and rock saddles in the creek and repairing the undermined footing. A reinforced-concrete dam near the midpoint of the wall that was partially demolished was removed to the limits of the creek, along with four trees that were restricting flow. The comprehensive efforts undertaken by RETTEW not only ensured the safety of residents and the structural integrity of the retaining wall, but also contributed to the environmental health of Plymouth Creek.
